Isn’t it funny that just when you think you’ve made a decent picture, fate intervenes and reminds you with the next one that she plays a part in your success too? I bought these chilli plants yesterday and thought that I could paint them in watercolour. Boy, has it been a struggle.
I’ve finished the picture, and although it’s kind of ok, I’m still feeling there’s something missing. I think my issues might have been partly due to the fact that I didn’t have a very clear picture in my head of how I wanted this to look.
First I painted the plants very lightly and sketchily in yellows and pale greens. The little chillies just looked wishy-washy and malformed. I added a darker green, and they still looked unconvincing. They only started to perk up a little bit when I threw in some Windsor Blue, but I feel that even that wasn’t their salvation.
I don’t know. Some you win, some you, well, don’t win so much… But onwards and upwards!
Don’t be hard on yourself, it looks great, and it’s beautifully crafted.

And i wonder if a touch of red, even just a smidge would solve the missing thing issue. Just to add a touch of warmth? Just an idea.

That’s interesting – I’d been wondering the same thing myself. Not sure if I’m brave enough though! I’ll take a view on it tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!

Very nice. If you want to add a little something, what about a little ladybug or something on the left side? : ) I sort of feel like there could be a garden tool or something. Maybe a shadow below the container? Lovely work.

Thanks for the thoughts – I’m going to sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning… Cat also suggested red, I’m sure you’re both right!

I love it; I think it’s beautiful. I’d add red mixed with green to give a bit more depth to some of the leaves. But it’s lovely as it is, I think.

Thank you, and for your thoughts. Red in some form or other seems to be a common theme! I might come back to this one… if I don’t get distracted by another picture 🙂 .

you are brave to be so frank.
little vignettes offer up something for each viewer to complete. viewers of paintings have work to do also–painters aren’t required to be so complete there is no visual conversation necessary.
….that aside, in our backyard at this moment there are three little immature chili plants in a row just like these. and so, you see, you so easily brought me a smile from the other side of the planet.
and that for any painter, is success.

Thank you for the excellent wisdom; it’s also wonderful to know that a picture can make a connection, even across continents.

I love the combination of greens in this – stunning! I wouldn’t have guessed you would be unhappy with it. After reading the comments though I can now also imagine some red in there making that green shine even brighter 🙂
