Cloud-busting

We’ve been having some wonderful end-of-summer skies recently; big, high, billowy clouds, blue skies behind, sunshine and contrast. I thought it would be pleasant to try to capture a little piece of this before the grey skies of winter descend on us (probably all too soon).

Cloud practice watercolourIt’s a small page, 14 x 19cms, so a little paint went quite a long way. I didn’t manage to really record the colours and shapes in the clouds – this is very much an approximation, but I got swept up in adding contrast using the violet and indigo. I dropped in a little Indian Yellow mixed with Quinacridone Red too, just to take the whiteness off some areas and try to add a hint of sunshine.

Sitting in the sunshine painting is not such a bad way to savour the last gasp of summer…
