It seemed like time for a change from watercolour and flowers. But what do you draw when you don’t know what to draw? For me it’s sometimes what’s right in front of me, no questions asked – in this case, my right hand. I furnished it with a pencil for a prop, even though it wouldn’t know what to do with one. It’s good to accessorise, right?
So here it is, a quick and strangely colourful pencil drawing in my black sketchbook. I really enjoyed taking a rough-and-ready approach to this, just getting stuck in with the colours and not worrying too much about the outcome. In short, having fun. And that’s what it’s all about.
It came out great! And I love it on the dark paper.

Thanks – I do like to use a dark paper from time to time, it just shakes things up a little (and you don’t have to worry about what to do with the background!).

Using dark paper is on my list! 🙂

Definitely give it a go – it makes you think a bit differently, believe it or not. 🙂

I love the detail in this!
You said I should not feel obligated to nominate you for the Versatile Blogger Award. I nominated you anyway because I think you create some beautiful art–obligation had no part in it. I hope that’s okay!

Lefties rock! (except when we have to use scissors). Glad you liked it. 🙂

I keep thinking about doing some of this non-dominant hand sketching, but time’s so short, and there’s so much still to sketch using my left hand! Have you had a go?

Yeah, it’s interesting to try once but not something I’ll do again soon. Drawing is mostly about your brain anyway, deciding where to put a line. Having less coordination just forces you to slow down.

Haha! I have my justification for not having to do it now… 🙂

This is beautiful, Rebecca!! Love the dark paper. Can’t believe this was a quick one. Way to go!

Thanks! I think it took about 35 mins, so not really, really fast, but a little window of time before making dinner… you know how it is!

No doubt! I’m amazed at the detail you got though, working that quickly. Is this pastel?

It’s coloured pencil, so something I’m comfortable with after years of graphite use. Great for details. The sketchbook is 8″sq; the pic itself is probably only about 5 ins. Not too much space to cover in a short time 🙂 .

This is really amazing, it is difficult to have confidence on black paper (since it is far less forgiving) and you did the shading quite perfectly. I love it.

Thank you so much. I like to mix it up a bit with the paper, it makes you think a little differently, which is good when you’ve been working on a pale background for a while. Variety is the spice of life! 🙂

This is great, Rebecca! You’ve captured the shapes and three-dimensionality really well. My favourite parts are the nails and the red, bright colours in the palm.

Good hand!!! I seem to have forgotten how to draw them this week. I may need to practice.

Thanks Cat 🙂 . Have fun practicing, I look forward to seeing your sketches, as always. (I’m thinking of having a go in ink with a brush, not sure I’ll be able to make it work, but sounds like a challenge…)

It’ll be a whole new world of fun 🙂 look forward to seeing them. My drawings of hands may have to benon hold for a while, as I have turtles on the brain again. Sorry in advance 🙂

You inspired me to get on and do hands in ink this morning – thanks so much for kicking me out of a time where I’ve been wallowing in the difficulty of watercolours 🙂

Aaw, really? Glad I could help! Though your watercolours are awesome. Perhaps just a change is what you needed. 🙂
